Oh. Yeah, me neither. Totally never happens.
But so yeah. Um. Look! It's a NOID gesneriad!

Pretty, right? This picture would probably have gone up several days sooner than this if I had been able to figure out what it was. I actually feel quite strongly that I know what this is, and that the answer is somewhere in one of the dustier corners of my brain, perhaps in a box labeled "surge suppressors & extension cords" instead of "gesneriad IDs." But the ideas I had didn't result in any matching Google image search results, so I'm stumped. I'm sure someone out there must know.
For the record, I don't have any ID at all on it; nobody told me it was a gesneriad. I am oddly positive that it is, but it wouldn't, like, ruin my entire day if it turned out not to be.
Looks like Columnea to me. As for the cultivar, well, who knows?
ReplyDeleteI agree, I would say this is a Columnea. I don't have any description matching this dark foliage in my books to provide any help with the cultivar name.
ReplyDeleteAlladins lamp is the only one i know of.
ReplyDeleteSorry, spelt that wrong, its meant to be aladdin's lamp.
ReplyDeleteColumnea Firebird maybe. I've sold a few that look like that one but their flowers weren't as upright (more droopy)...
ReplyDeleteHmm. Columnea is . . . not what I was expecting people to say. But a Google image search confirms. I'm thinking C. 'Early Bird' is a likely candidate.
ReplyDeleteI was under the impression previously that Columnea flowers were tubular along their whole length, more like Aeschynanthus. Obviously not true, but just to explain my confusion.
Thanks, everybody!
Can't comment on the Columnea, though it looks like you have a positive ID, whew! But oh, yes, I certainly know about those blogging trials. I managed to hit "publish" instead of "save" on one just this afternoon, so now I have two posted today and none for tomorrow. Ack!!!!
ReplyDeleteFor all your gesneriad needs, this is the website: http://gesneriads.ca/
ReplyDeleteThere are tons of pictures of various species of gesneriads. It's quite a nifty resource!
Glad to see you've got an id on this. I was leaning towards columnea too, but didn't know about cultivars/varieties etc. Have never seen this before and now, of course, I wants it, my precious, I wants it!
