A few days back, I reported that our Polyscias fruticosa had flower buds on it. Well, now they've opened, more or less (flowers are apparently never all open at once), and it's a little underwhelming.
The second picture is very large when clicked on:
Not really worth the hype, but oh well. It was new.
It seems to me that among houseplants, if a plant has gained popularity for its particularly interesting foliage or growth habit, the flowers are often small and nondescript, or even have negative qualities, like yesterday's Gynura.
ReplyDeleteConversely, in my experience most houseplants grown for their flowers tend to have rather plain foliage.
The exceptions that spring readily to mind are Hoyas and Strelitzias. Both have flowers with exceptional qualities, but both can be reluctant to bloom, so the nice foliage is a consolation prize, or even the main attraction. As far as I'm concerned, I don't care if my White Bird of Paradise ever blooms.
Definitely not grown for its flowers!
