Due to a much larger-than-normal influx of spam commenters that appeared about a week ago, I turned on comment moderation for all comments earlier today. Previously, moderation had been on only for posts more than a week old.
The only effect this should have on your life is that it will take longer for your comments to show up here at PATSP, because they'll have to wait until I read them and decide whether they're blog- and post-relevant, which I think we can all agree isn't that big of a deal in the overall scheme of things.
I thought google introduced some new automatic spam detection system for blogger. Apparently it's not working particularly well.
ReplyDeleteIt's been working more or less okay for me -- it's caught a lot of them, not everything but maybe 70%. It's just that there are suddenly so many more spam comments to begin with, that some get through anyway. This actually coincides with the introduction of the new anti-spam system, which makes me wonder about some things.
ReplyDeleteSpam happens:) They are finding creative ways of doing it.
ReplyDeleteI turned on the word verification a few months ago, and I still get "make large your penis erection pleasure the hole tonight" ads. Comment moderation seems like so much effort, and then you have to read people's whiney comments twice that go on and on and you just end up wanting to make large.....

ReplyDeleteWell, the point is not to make the spam stop coming -- it's so cheap to produce that even if it almost never works to get anybody's money, it still works well enough to keep doing it. The point of turning on comment moderation is to take away the reward for spamming, and also to prevent readers from having to look at it.
Took me an hour this morning - so sympathy - and I keep finding comments on posts for which I have no email notification.
ReplyDeleteI recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog.
