Pretty pictures: Paphiopedilum Winston Churchill 'Indomitable'

This is just depressing. I would totally try to grow Paphiopedilums if I thought there was a chance they wouldn't die on me.

Actually "depressing" is probably not the word. I'm not sad, I'm uncomfortably envious. Which is an entirely different feeling.

I was fortunate to find a nice write-up of this particular cross elsewhere on the internet, so instead of saying more, I'll just direct interested persons to this page.

So these are like a lot more difficult to grow than my Phalaenopsis then?

Probably? I mean, "difficult" is always dependent on the conditions you've got: how much light is available, how often you're willing to water, the temperature you keep your home at, etc. I tried a Paphiopedilum once, and it didn't actually die, but it got progressively smaller, the roots alternated between vanishing and growing back, the leaf variegation disappeared, and then after 3 1/2 years of that bullshit I threw it away. Not only was it not happy, but I also had no idea what I was supposed to be doing differently with it.

(And please nobody tell me now; I don't need to be encouraged to go through all that again.)

As far as it goes, I can't actually rebloom a Phalaenopsis either, though in that particular case, 1) the plant still grows new leaves and gets larger and stuff, and 2) I think I know what I'm supposed to be doing to get flowers (cooler temperatures), and I just don't do that.

I love paphs. I have one that I have managed to rebloom once. It is growing out again now. I guess I'll see if I get another flower.

I can't even get Phals to rebloom even when I do the whole temperature thing. I have better things to do with my space and money than spend it on more orchids, so I doubt I'll ever try a Paph. (Although I might pick up another Dendrobium bigibbum if I find one on a discount rack.)
