Pretty picture: Pescatorea lehmannii

Another picture from the orchid show back in March. I really liked this one, partly because it was a species I'd never heard of before -- a genus I'd never heard of before, even! -- and partly because of the weird furry lip. I went looking around to see if I could locate any interesting trivia about this plant, but as far as Wikipedia and davesgarden.com are concerned, it doesn't exist. Which actually makes me like it even more.

Interesting. I am very curious about the purpose of that furry lip, but I couldn't find much info either.

The best I could find was minimal info on the genus here: http://orchids.wikia.com/wiki/Pescatoria, and a very pretty picture here: http://www.eol.org/pages/1135639.

Btw, you've misspelled it slightly. It's Pescatoria lehmannii with 2 n's.

Thanks for the correction. I normally double-check the spellings, because the people presenting plants at the orchid show usually don't, but in this case I guess I didn't. Or I did and just didn't notice the second "n."

hard to find because the genus is Pescatorea not Pescatoria. it happens - I am really bad at typing on a keyboard.

anyway on the orchidspecies site you can find amost anything:

Wow. It wasn't a typo; they just didn't spell any of the name correctly at the orchid show. Thanks for the correction and link.

I actually see so many misspellings on Orchid forums! And I am not talking about Orchid names!

@stefanogiovannini: I saw both spellings for the genus when I did my search. I'm not sure which one is correct.

Well don't know this could very well be "orchid overload" for you but you can find a plethora of orchid species photos here:

http://www.orchidspecies.com/

Information per species is very compressed and details like why the lip is hairy is unfortunately lacking but considering the volume of species addressed, one certainly can't fault the man......

never heard of it either.
the flower reminds me of the Bifrenaria-s, but this one seems to lack any prominent pseudobulbs.
