We've just gotten some Gardenia jasminoides in at work, after several months of only having one kind of problematic large one that refused to bud (and then disappeared when it did start to bud), so I've been reacquainting myself. They don't actually spend all day lurking in the shadows, but when I saw that that was the direction the photo was heading, I elected to run with it. .jpg)

Gardenias seem to be a bit on the touchy side to grow and get to bloom. They need a variation in day and night temps in order to bloom and because they are so fragrant people have a tendency to plant them near the house where they are in a protected area that has little temperature variation, causing them to drop buds.
