Strictly speaking, this isn't an event. The plant in question has looked more or less like this for at least a year now. But I bring it up anyway in the hopes of settling a question that arose recently at Garden Web, regarding whether or not birdsnest ferns can develop trunks.
Looks like it to me.
This fails to answer the original question, which was how one gets one to produce a trunk. I still have no idea. I assume it involves lots of time.

That was me, with the Bird's Nest Fern stuff. I'm jealous, now. I guess I'll have to just look around for ones that have trunks already.
sure looks like a trunk to me. A. nidus is one of the most gorgeous of ferns, IMHO.
Yikes, trick questions...I should have studied harder before visiting. Thanks for the link to lure me here. And a confession: I like weirdo African violets a lot, but never let myself buy them. Maybe now I will.
...
...?
I never could manage Asplenium nidus. I think I overwatered mine and killed it. Haven't tried again since. :(
